Former North Carolina signee Avery Edwards has resurfaced at Maryland.

Terps head coach Randy Edsall announced Monday that Edwards, a tight end, has joined Maryland’s roster and is eligible immediately.

Edwards originally signed with the Tar Heels in the 2014 class, but never played a down at UNC after being arrested last June for felony larceny. He was accused of stealing five watches and one pair of diamond stud earrings, all of which were valued at $53,000. The charge was later dismissed, according to the Washington Post.

"I have had great discussions with Avery since we first made contact and throughout his visit to campus," Edsall said. "I am confident he has learned from past experiences and will be a great teammate as he makes a seamless transition to the University of Maryland. Avery has a relentless work ethic and strong desire to succeed both on and off the field."

A native of Raleigh, N.C., Edwards was a three-star recruit and rated by Rivals as the 24th-best tight end prospect in the 2014 recruiting class. He caught 45 passes for 629 yards and seven touchdowns as a high school senior.

“I want to thank the University of Maryland and Coach Edsall for allowing me to be a part of this program and great university,” Edwards said in a statement. “I have grown immensely over the past year and I am eager to join my new teammates on the field and represent Maryland this fall.”

According to the Post, Edwards spent the 2014 season at IMG Academy in Bradenton, Fla. He will have four seasons of eligibility to play for the Terps.
